I met this man while Norman was surfing the other day. He is a fisherman in Mawi, a rural part of Lombok, Indonesia. He couldn’t speak a word of English and I couldn’t understand what he was trying to say to me, but we somehow managed to communicate and he posed for a photo. Although he’s not smiling, I think he secretly liked having his photo taken, or more specifically looking at the photo on the camera afterwards. He even volunteered to pose for another photo afterwards!
I love the shot. It’s so simple and raw, and I could spend hours pondering the lines on his face, and his life story. The greenery behind him provides a wonderful contrast to his chocolatey skin, and the focus is centered on him. Just look into those eyes, they are filled with mysteries I will never uncover.
